The Whole Number: What an Outdoor Sauna Really Costs

Before asking whether a sauna is expensive, ask what the price includes. A sauna listing shows one number, but the heater, the delivery and the installation are separate choices, so the true outdoor sauna cost is the sum of all of them. Below, we lay out that sum for four of our outdoor saunas, as one figure each. Two things stay outside it because they depend on your property: the base and the electrician. We say so plainly, so nothing is left to discover later. Then we look at why each one is built to last, and what it becomes over years of evenings.

The Whole Number

A price on its own leaves things out. Every sauna needs heat, it needs to reach your property, and it needs to be built or set in place. Here is each of those parts added together, in Canadian and US dollars.

USD amounts in this post are estimates, converted from CAD at the current exchange rate.

These are the same four saunas from our latest collection: the Outdoor 550 Pure Cube, the Leil Black Cube Premium, The Superior Hydra and the Auroom Terra.

Take the Outdoor 550 Pure Cube. The sauna is $11,984 CAD and comes with its EPDM roof. The heater setup is a Huum Drop 7.5 kW with an Uku Local control and four boxes of stones, at $3,227 CAD. Full delivery and on-site assembly within 250 km is $2,000 CAD. Together that comes to $17,211 CAD. The base and the electrician are the only parts left, and they depend on your property.

What the Whole Number Includes

The sauna itself, with its finished, weatherproof roof.

A complete electric heater setup: the heater, the Uku Local control and the stones, with the heater sized to the sauna's volume. Our sauna heaters and stoves show the other options.

Delivery to your home and installation. For the 550 Pure Cube and the Hydra, our Full Delivery and Assembly service brings the sauna to your property and builds it on your base, within 250 km. If you prefer to build it yourself, the kit can instead ship to a depot at a separate freight cost.

Here is how each sauna reaches you, and the heater used in its figure.

What Sits Outside It

Comparing Budgets?

If you are still deciding how much to spend, our guide to sauna prices explained compares what each price range offers.

Built to Last

What the whole number pays for is something made once and lived with for years.

The Wood

The 550 Pure Cube and the Hydra are built from Western red cedar. It is aromatic and naturally weather resistant, and it ages well outdoors.

The Black Cube and the Terra use thermally modified wood, heat treated for stability through every season. The Black Cube's walls are 40 mm Thermowood, and its back wall is 40 mm thermo-pine, about 43 percent thicker than a typical 28 mm wall. Each wood has its own character, and our comparison of cedar vs Thermowood explains the difference.

The Craftsmanship

The details decide how a sauna ages. The 550 Pure Cube and the Hydra have double-pane glass and a weather resistant EPDM roof. The Hydra adds a wrap-around glass front with side panels, and insulated walls, ceiling and floor.

The Black Cube has black tempered glass in the front and the door, under a shingle roof. The Terra has a gently pitched roof that sends rainwater to a gutter at the back, away from the wood.

The 550 Pure Cube, the Hydra and the Black Cube are assembled on your base by our installers. The Terra arrives assembled from its maker.

The Warranty, in Plain Language

Every sauna is covered for one year from the day you receive it. If something is not right, call us first.

A Ritual, Over Time

A sauna is a ritual you return to.

People buy a sauna for the evening when the day finally loosens its hold, and for every evening after. The short walk out in January. The guests who stay longer than planned.

An outdoor sauna changes with the year. In summer it is a late evening with the door open to the garden. In autumn it is the first cold night, when the walk from the house is short and the heat is already waiting. In winter it is snow on the roof and warm light in the window, seen from the kitchen well before you step outside.

It asks very little of you. Turn on the heater, give it time, and step out. Over ten years, the details you chose are what you notice: a weather resistant roof, wood chosen for the outdoors, glass that keeps the warmth in.

The longer a sauna is part of your evenings, the less each one costs. Here is the whole number spread across four evenings a week for ten years.

An illustration only. Each figure divides the whole number by 2,080 evenings, four a week for ten years, and leaves out the base and the electrician, which depend on your property.
