Outdoor Sauna Installation: What to Expect | Muskoka Sauna Co.

Buying a sauna is the easy part. Picturing how it gets from our workshop into your backyard is where most people start to worry. Will it fit through the gate? What does the ground need? Who handles the power? This guide walks you through outdoor sauna installation step by step, so you know exactly what happens, when it happens, and the small list of things that are actually yours to do. Most of the work is ours. Your job is to get the spot ready and enjoy the first sweat.

How Outdoor Sauna Installation Works

Every sauna we deliver follows the same six steps. Some take a day, some take a few weeks, and only two of them need much from you: preparing your site and sorting out permits and power. Here is how the timeline usually looks.

Lead times depend on the model. Most take 4 to 8 weeks, and we confirm your date when you order. If you want the short version of the process, our After You Buy page covers each step on one page.

Step 1: Lock In Your Order

In Ontario and Florida, your sauna is built by our in-house assembly team. Everywhere else, we partner with specialized third-party installers who are trained on our saunas, so you get the same quality build wherever you are. In Ontario and Florida, a 50% deposit holds your place in the queue. The balance is due 3 business days before your delivery or install date. Everywhere else, payment is due in full when you order.

You can pay by Interac e-transfer, Zelle or wire transfer, with no fees.

Tip

Plan backwards from the date you want your first sweat. If you want the sauna ready for a long weekend or the first snowfall, order with your lead time in mind and leave a little room for site prep.

Step 2: Choose How Your Sauna Arrives

There are three ways to get your sauna home. Here is how they compare.

We Build It On Site

In Ontario and Florida, our in-house assembly team builds your sauna right on your base. Everywhere else, specialized third-party installers trained on our saunas do it, so you get the same quality build wherever you are. This is the most hands-off option and it works for most models and most backyards. Assembly is quoted with your order and varies by model. You can see how it works on our on-site sauna installation page.

Fully Assembled Delivery

Some saunas arrive in one piece, ready to set down and heat up. They are craned into place or moved in with medium to heavy equipment, so the path and the space overhead matter more here. This option covers select Auroom models (Terra, Garda, Natura and Arti), all Saunum saunas and the SaunaLife G6. The Auroom Terra is a good example of what arrives fully built.

DIY Kit

If you like a project, the DIY kit comes with full assembly instructions. Block off a weekend and grab a friend. Depending on where you order from, the kit is delivered to your door or picked up at a local depot. Either way, the cost is included in your quote, so there are no surprises later.

Step 3: Get Your Backyard Ready

This is the step where your part matters most. A good base, a clear way in and a plan for water make install day quick and simple.

Choose the Right Base

Your sauna needs a level, sturdy base at least as big as its footprint. The right outdoor sauna foundation depends on your yard and how permanent you want the spot to be.

Base

Good for

Watch for

Gravel pad

Most backyards, drains well

Compact it and keep it level

Concrete slab

A permanent spot

Slope it slightly so water runs off

Deck

Saunas near the house or the water

It must carry the sauna's weight

Patio stones

Smaller saunas, quick setup

Every stone level, no settling

Plan for Drainage

Water should never pool around your sauna. Whatever base you choose, it should drain or shed water away from the walls. In colder climates, think about where spring snowmelt runs, and keep the sauna out of low spots where it collects.

Clear the Way In

Our crew or the delivery equipment needs a clear, safe path from the street to your base. Use this checklist before the day.

Islands, Steep Lots and Hard-to-Reach Sites

Cottage on an island? Lot on a steep slope? All of these are doable. We work them out case by case, and a few photos of the property and the route in tell us most of what we need. Send them early: changes inside 5 business days of your date carry a fee, so earlier photos help keep things simple.

Not sure your site is ready? Send us a couple of photos of your base and the way in, and we'll tell you. Book a consultation

Our saunas are built for harsh winters, so a cold site is not a problem as long as the base is solid. If you are still deciding where the sauna should go, our guide to choosing the right sauna for your outdoor space can help.

Step 4: Permits and Power

Do You Need a Permit for an Outdoor Sauna?

It depends on where you live. Permit and setback rules vary by municipality, so check with your local authority before install day. If you need to apply, we send the product documentation to help with your application.

Power Requirements by Heater Type

What you need depends on how your sauna is heated.

Heater

Power needed

Who installs it

Good to know

Electric heater

Dedicated 240V circuit

A licensed electrician

Can be run after we build the sauna

Wood-burning stove

None

Not needed

Check local bylaws on distances to property lines, hedges and neighbours

The electrician is hired and paid by you, and the circuit is not part of the sauna install. We work with electrician and base-builder partners across North America, so if you need a name, just ask. To compare heating options, see our electric sauna heaters, our wood-burning stoves and our guide to wood stoves vs electric heaters.

Step 5: Install Day

In Ontario and Florida, most saunas are built in a single day by our assembly team, and Leil saunas usually take two days. Elsewhere, we confirm the timing with you when we schedule your date. Your part is small: show the crew the base, then get on with your day. By the evening, the sauna is standing in your backyard, ready for its first heat once the power is connected.

For a fully assembled model, install day is delivery day: the sauna is set down on your pad in one piece. If you have an electric heater, book your electrician for after the sauna is in place, since the circuit can be run once it is built.

Step 6: After the First Sweat

Inspect Within 24 Hours

Take a careful look at your sauna within 24 hours of delivery. If anything arrived damaged, send us photos and we will repair or replace it at no cost, including coming back to install the replacement.

Warranty Coverage

Everything we sell is covered. Brand-name saunas, heaters and cold plunges carry their manufacturer's warranty, and the saunas and cabins we build ourselves carry our own warranty of at least two years. If something goes wrong, call us first and we will help with the claim.

Caring for Your Sauna

A little care keeps your sauna looking and working like new for years. Start with our first-use guide, then keep our guide on how to clean and maintain your sauna handy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put a sauna in my backyard?

Yes, in most cases. You need a level, sturdy base at least as big as the sauna, a clear path for delivery and, for an electric heater, a dedicated 240V circuit. Check your local permit and setback rules first. If your yard is tricky, send us a few photos and we'll talk you through it.

How long does outdoor sauna installation take?

In Ontario and Florida, most saunas are built on site in a single day by our assembly team, and Leil saunas usually take two. Elsewhere, we confirm the timing with you when we schedule your date. Before that, lead times depend on the model, with most arriving in 4 to 8 weeks. A DIY kit usually takes a weekend with a helper.

Do I need a permit for an outdoor sauna?

It depends on your municipality. Permit and setback rules vary from place to place, so check with your local authority before you build. If you need to apply, we send product documentation to support your application. Wood-burning stoves can also have rules on distances to property lines and neighbours.

What kind of base does an outdoor sauna need?

A level, sturdy base at least as big as the sauna. A compacted gravel pad works for most backyards and drains well. A concrete slab suits a permanent spot, a deck works if it can carry the weight, and patio stones suit smaller saunas. Whatever you choose, keep water from pooling around it.

Can I install a sauna myself?

Yes. Our DIY kits come with full assembly instructions, and most people finish in a weekend with a helper. Depending on where you order from, the kit is delivered to your door or picked up at a local depot, and the cost is included in your quote. Electric heaters still need a licensed electrician.

Do you deliver to my area?

We deliver saunas across North America, with showrooms in Muskoka, Ontario and Boca Raton, Florida. Delivery options depend on where you are and the model you choose. Send us your location and a few photos of your site, and we'll tell you what works best.

Ready to Plan Yours?

You don't need to have everything figured out before you reach out, or even a model picked from our outdoor saunas.

Send us a few photos of your spot and the way in, and we'll talk you through the base, the delivery and the timeline.

Book a consultation and we'll take it from there.
